Student Workspace for Aerial Robotics and Mechatronics

SWARM is IEEE at USF’s drone and autonomous systems program. We give students hands-on experience with drone hardware, flight software, embedded systems, FPV systems, mission planning, and autonomous flight operations.

The program is built around a simple idea: students learn best by designing, building, testing, and improving real systems. SWARM balances member engagement, technical skill development, and real engineering applications — combining smaller FPV builds with larger applied autonomy projects instead of repeatedly building the same type of drone.

Members work across both a hobby-facing side and a sponsor-facing technical side, gaining practical drone hardware experience while contributing to projects that demonstrate autonomy, systems engineering, testing, and operations.

Overall Vision

SWARM should not only be a group that builds drone after drone. The stronger vision is to create a structured program that connects fun, accessible drone projects with serious engineering applications.

The program is organized around two connected tracks:

Member Engagement Track

Smaller FPV drones, whoops, racing, simulator qualifiers, and hands-on builds that keep members excited and involved.

Applied Engineering Track

Larger autonomous drones focused on payload delivery, mission planning, sensing, safety procedures, and real-world engineering applications.

This gives SWARM both a hobby-facing side and a sponsor-facing technical side. Members learn practical drone hardware while also contributing to projects that demonstrate autonomy, systems engineering, testing, and operations.
